Born 1982 in Huong Thuy, Thua Thien Hue province, Vietnam. Grew up in rural Central Vietnam fascinated by machines and mathematics. Attended Quoc Hoc Hue High School. Moved to Australia in 2004, earning a Bachelor's degree from the Australian National University (working with Alex Smola on kernel methods). PhD at Stanford (2012) under Andrew Ng. Became a founding member of Google Brain in 2011 alongside Ng, Jeff Dean, and Greg Corrado -- led the famous experiment that trained a network on 16,000 CPUs to recognize cats in YouTube videos. Co-invented the sequence-to-sequence model (2014, with Sutskever and Vinyals), important for machine translation and later LLMs. Initiated and led AutoML/Neural Architecture Search at Google Brain (2017). Now a Google Fellow at Google DeepMind. Named MIT Technology Review Innovators Under 35 (2014).
