Born 1976 in London to Hong Kong immigrant parents (father a hematologist, mother an arts administrator). Grew up in Singapore, attending the prestigious Raffles Institution. Earned a triple major in Computer Science, Statistics, and Economics from Carnegie Mellon (1997), an MS in EECS from MIT (1998), and a PhD in Computer Science from UC Berkeley (2002) under Michael I. Jordan. Joined Stanford as a professor (2002) where his CS229 Machine Learning course became the most popular class on campus (1000+ students). Co-founded Google Brain in 2011 with Jeff Dean -- their famous experiment trained a network on 16,000 CPUs that learned to recognize cats in YouTube videos. Co-founded Coursera (2012) with Daphne Koller, democratizing education for 8M+ students. Served as Chief Scientist at Baidu (2014-2017), leading 1,300 AI researchers. Founded DeepLearning.AI (2017), Landing AI (2018), and the AI Fund ($175M venture fund).
