Born in Chile, raised in Catalonia, Spain. Earned a BS from UC Berkeley, MS from UC San Diego, and PhD from UC Berkeley (2016) under Nelson Morgan. Joined Google Brain and later DeepMind. Co-invented the sequence-to-sequence model (2014, with Sutskever and Quoc Le), one of the architectures that led to modern LLMs. Led AlphaStar (2019), the AI that defeated top StarCraft II players.
