Born 1968 as Li Yanhong in Yangquan, Shanxi Province, China. Studied Information Management at Peking University, then earned an MS in Computer Science from the University at Buffalo, New York. While in the US, created RankDex (1996), an early search engine that used hyperlink analysis for page ranking -- predating Google's PageRank. Founded Baidu in 2000 with Eric Xu, growing it into China's dominant search engine. Has been CEO since 2004. Pivoted Baidu heavily toward AI: developed autonomous driving platform Apollo Go (20M+ rides by 2025), launched ERNIE (Wenxin) large language model series, and ERNIE Bot which reached 202M monthly active users by December 2025. Named to TIME 100 AI (2023). One of the earliest advocates for AI in China, betting on AI for over a decade before it became mainstream.
