Born 1983 in San Francisco. Father was an Italian-American leather craftsman from Tuscany; mother was Jewish American from Chicago. Attended Lowell High School in San Francisco, USA Physics Olympiad team (2000). BS Physics Stanford, PhD Biophysics Princeton (2011) under Michael J. Berry and William Bialek. Postdoc Stanford School of Medicine. Pivoted to AI: joined Baidu Silicon Valley AI Lab (SVAIL) Nov 2014–Oct 2015 under Andrew Ng, co-led Deep Speech 2 (English+Mandarin end-to-end speech recognition, MIT TR Top 10 Breakthrough 2015), an experience that revealed scaling laws empirically. Then OpenAI VP Research (2016-2021) leading scaling+GPT. Co-founded Anthropic Jan 2021 with sister Daniela and other ex-OpenAI members on safety divergence. 2026.4 Anthropic ARR $30B reportedly overtook OpenAI's $25B.
