Born 1963 in Munich, Germany. Earned his PhD from the Technical University of Munich (1991). Co-director of the Swiss AI Lab IDSIA in Lugano. Co-invented Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with Sepp Hochreiter (1997) -- the architecture that powered Google Translate, Siri, Alexa, and most sequence modeling before Transformers. Also worked early on meta-learning, neural network compression, and formal theories of curiosity-driven learning. Founded NNAISENSE (2014) for industrial AI. Moved to KAUST in Saudi Arabia (2021) to lead the AI Initiative. Known for being vocal about credit attribution in deep learning history, frequently reminding the community of pre-2012 contributions.
