Born 1963 in Munich, Germany. Earned his PhD from the Technical University of Munich (1991). Co-director of the Swiss AI Lab IDSIA in Lugano. Co-invented Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks with Sepp Hochreiter (1997) -- the architecture that powered Google Translate, Siri, Alexa, and most sequence modeling before Transformers. Also worked early on meta-learning, neural network compression, and formal theories of curiosity-driven learning. Founded NNAISENSE (2014) for industrial AI.
