Austrian computer scientist. Studied computer science at the Technical University of Munich, completing his diploma thesis under Juergen Schmidhuber in 1991 -- in which he first identified the vanishing gradient problem in recurrent neural networks. This led to the invention of LSTM (1997, with Schmidhuber), which solved the problem and became the dominant architecture for sequence modeling for two decades. Professor at Johannes Kepler University Linz (Austria). Founded the ELLIS Unit Linz and the Institute for Machine Learning at JKU. Also contributed to bioinformatics with DeepTox.
