Born 1985 in Chicago, grew up in Clayton, Missouri. Attended John Burroughs School, then enrolled at Stanford for Computer Science but dropped out after two years (2005). Co-founded Loopt at age 19, a location-based social networking startup (raised $30M+, acquired by Green Dot for $43.4M in 2012). Joined Y Combinator as a partner (2011) and became its president in 2014, succeeding Paul Graham. Co-founded OpenAI in 2015 as a nonprofit AI research lab, became CEO in March 2019 and led its transformation into the company behind ChatGPT (launched Nov 2022) and GPT-4. Fired by the OpenAI board on November 17, 2023, but was reinstated just five days later after a dramatic employee revolt where over 700 of 770 staff threatened to leave.
