German AI researcher. Studied physics at Heidelberg University before transitioning to computer science. PhD at LMU Munich under Bjorn Ommer. Co-authored the Latent Diffusion paper (2022) which introduced the breakthrough idea of running diffusion in compressed latent space rather than pixel space -- reducing compute cost by 10-100x while maintaining quality. This became Stable Diffusion, the most widely used open-source image generation model. Joined Stability AI as research director. In 2024, left to co-found Black Forest Labs with the original latent diffusion team (Blattmann, Esser, Lorenz), creating the FLUX family of models that quickly became industry-leading image generators.
