Born in Ukraine, grew up in Canada. PhD student under Geoffrey Hinton at the University of Toronto. In 2012, built AlexNet with Hinton and Ilya Sutskever, a deep convolutional neural network that won the ImageNet competition by a massive margin (error rate of 15.3% vs. the runner-up's 26.2%). This result is widely considered the moment that ignited the modern deep learning era, proving that GPU-trained deep networks could dramatically outperform traditional computer vision. The three co-founded DNNresearch, which was acquired by Google in 2013. Has maintained a relatively low public profile since.
