何恺明 Kaiming HeKaiming He

Born 1984 in Guangzhou, Guangdong, China. Attended Guangzhou Zhixin High School, where he scored first place in the entire Guangdong province on the 2003 college entrance exam. Earned a BS from Tsinghua University (2007), then a PhD in Information Engineering from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (2011, Multimedia Lab), with a thesis on image dehazing. Joined Microsoft Research Asia (MSRA) as a research scientist, where he created ResNet (Residual Networks, 2015) -- the paper 'Deep Residual Learning for Image Recognition' is the most-cited paper of the 21st century. ResNet's skip connections solved the vanishing gradient problem and enabled training of networks with 100+ layers. Also co-created Mask R-CNN for instance segmentation. Moved to Facebook AI Research (FAIR). Joined MIT as associate professor (2024), appointed Douglas Ross Career Development Professor. In 2025, also joined Google DeepMind while retaining MIT tenure, pursuing a dual academia + industry path.
