Built LangChain as a weekend open-source project in late 2022, when nobody had a name yet for chaining LLM calls into applications; it became the default scaffolding for a generation of LLM apps and, with Ankush Gola, a company in February 2023. Shipped LangSmith for tracing and evaluating agents and LangGraph for durable, stateful agent control flow — a deliberate retreat from magic abstractions toward explicit graphs after the framework drew criticism for hiding too much. LangChain 1.0 landed in October 2025 alongside a $125M round led by IVP at a $1.25B valuation, with Sequoia, Benchmark, CapitalG and Databricks participating. Harvard stats and CS.
