Australian-born computational linguist. Earned degrees from the Australian National University, then a PhD in Linguistics from Stanford (1994). Joined Stanford's faculty and became a central figure in NLP. Co-authored the standard textbook 'Foundations of Statistical Natural Language Processing' (1999) and 'Introduction to Information Retrieval' (2008). Directed the Stanford NLP Group, producing tools (Stanford CoreNLP, Stanford Parser) used across the industry. Led the development of GloVe word embeddings (2014). Serves as Co-Director of Stanford HAI alongside Fei-Fei Li. His teaching and research have shaped multiple generations of NLP researchers.
