Chinese-American mathematician and AI researcher. Earned a BA in Mathematics from Harvard. Worked at Microsoft Research where he developed Tensor Programs theory and muP (Maximal Update Parametrization) -- a framework for optimal hyperparameter transfer across model scales that has become essential for training large language models efficiently. Co-founded xAI in 2023. Stepped back from xAI in January 2026 citing health issues.
