Born 1987, grew up in the San Francisco area. Earned a BS and MS in Computer Science from Stanford (under Andrew Ng's group), then a PhD in Machine Learning from the Universite de Montreal (2015) under Yoshua Bengio and Aaron Courville. During his PhD, famously invented Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) in 2014 -- the idea allegedly came to him during a conversation at a bar and he went home and coded the first version that night. Co-authored the definitive 'Deep Learning' textbook (2016) with Bengio and Courville. Career: Google Brain (post-PhD), OpenAI (2016-2017), Google Research (2017-2019), Apple Director of ML in Special Projects (2019-2022, resigned over return-to-office policy), then Google DeepMind (2022-present). Named MIT Tech Review 35 Under 35 (2017).
