AI researcher who earned his BS from USC in 2016 and joined Google Brain,where he developed Neural Architecture Search (NAS) using reinforcement learning to automate neural network design. He later joined OpenAI as VP of Research (Post-Training),where his team worked on alignment,tool use,evaluations and trained the models shipped into ChatGPT. In February 2025 he co-founded Thinking Machines Lab with Mira Murati and served as its CTO,before returning to OpenAI in late 2025. Returned to OpenAI in Jan 2026 together with Luke Metz and Sam Schoenholz after a stint as a Thinking Machines Lab co-founder.
