Researcher at METR working on threat modeling for loss-of-control risks from advanced AI. Best known for the 2020 'Biological Anchors' report — the most cited attempt to forecast transformative AI timelines from compute, which anchored a generation of AI-timelines debate — and for co-writing the Planned Obsolescence newsletter with Kelsey Piper. Previously led the technical AI safety grantmaking program at Open Philanthropy (now Coefficient Giving), funding much of the field's early alignment work.
